Niigata City is a beautiful gem located smack dab at the junction of the Shinano River, the longest river in Japan, and the Sea of Japan. (It is kind of like NYC, New York...the capital city and the prefecture both have the same name.) Niigata means "new lagoon" and is famous for everything having to do with water: rice, seafood, sake, and snow! Ocean, rivers, lagoons, etc. abound so that you are never far from water.
Curious about Niigata? Here are some fun links to give you a little taste for life in western Japan...far, far away from the bustle of Tokyo.
